Coronavirus cases in Ghana

Ghana maintained her spot as West Africa’s most impacted after the Health Ministry released latest figures yesterday. Ghana recorded 97 new cases to take the tally to 5,735, 114 more than Nigeria’s 5,621 as of May 17 8:00 GMT.

The good recovery rate continued with 294 discharges taking the tally to 1,754. Five more deaths were also recorded. But it is the recoveries that have stoked political jabbing after Joyce Bawa Mogtari, an aide to opposition leader and ex-president John Mahama questioned what had accounted for the spike. Pro-government voices criticized her on social media even as she stood by her demand. Government has yet to officially explain what accounted for over 1,000 recoveries in a space of two days.

Some analysts suspect that a redefinition of what constitutes recovery may account for the spike. Meanwhile President Akufo Addo was fact-checked on a long touted record about Ghana having conducted more tests per million people. An AFP report said the claims were not accurate and that South Africa, Djibouti and Mauritius were ahead of Ghana. Ghana recorded a boost in recoveries with a record 1,086 discharges authorities reported early Saturday.

The recovery tally now stands at 1,460. New cases of 108 took the national tally to 5,638; still the most impacted in the West Africa subregion. Ghana’s low recoveries had been a source of worry in the bracket of countries who had crossed the 5,000 mark. President Akufo-Addo also joined other world leaders in signing a UNAIDS petition pushing for a ‘People’s Vaccine’ against COVID-19. The president posted his assent on Twitter.
